DODGE CITY, KS - It will most assuredly be mayhem at Dodge City Raceway Park this Saturday night as the tracks hosts the Second Annual Sport Modified Mayhem event.
While the IMCA Sport Modifieds battle it atop the 3/8-mile clay oval for a $1,000 winner’s share, the night of racing action that goes green at 7:30 p.m. also includes IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks.
While Woodward, Oklahoma’s Jeff Kaup holds a 21 point advantage in his pursuit of a third consecutive DCRP track championship, the IMCA Sport Modifieds have been a form of mayhem with 11 consecutive different winners dating back to last year’s season finale.
Kaup is one of ten different drivers to reach IMCA Sport Mod victory lane in as many events this season with his triumph coming in the second race of the year on April 25 after Jeremy Sigler topped the April 11 season opener.
Since Kaup’s win, others reaching victory lane include Josh Appel, Clay Money, Austin Walker, Angel Munoz, Jason Lunow, Alan Brewster, Mike Appel and Dewayne Dechant.
The father-son duo of Mike and Josh Appel are closest to Kaup in the title chase with Mike just 21 points off Kaup’s lead pace and Josh another 36 points back in third. Brian May is fourth with Kevin Tabor rounding out the current top five in points.
A winner on June 6, Penokee’s Clay Money is the defending Sport Modified Mayhem champion after topping the inaugural running of the event last August.
In IMCA Modified action, Goddard’s Austin Allen has stretched his lead out to 89 points over Clay Sellard as he chases down a third consecutive track championship as well. Since Sellard won the opening three events of the season, the IMCA Modifieds have offered up six different winners in the last six events.
Michael Pepper’s lead in the IMCA Stock Car title chase is at 93 points over Ron Hartman while Cody Davis holds a commanding 136 point advantage over Reagan Sellard in the IMCA Hobby Stock points battle.
General admission for Saturday’s Second Annual Sport Modified Mayhem event is just $15 with children 11 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
