Pit Stop for Pidgey: Iowa Speedway Taking Reigns of “Pokémon Go” for Final Race Weekend of 2016

NEWTON, IA - For fans of “Pokémon Go” you’ll want to visit Iowa Speedway this weekend to take advantage of the Speedway’s two PokéStops that will be enhanced by “Lure Modules” as the 2016 race season comes to a close! Be sure to “catch ‘em all,” alongside the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Casey’s General Stores 150 presented by Vatterott College on Friday, July 29, and NASCAR XFINITY Series U.S. Cellular 250 on Saturday, July 30. With millions of downloads since its release on July 6, “Pokémon Go” has more active users than Twitter, according to social media tracking firm SimilarWeb, and is overshadowing Facebook and Instagram as America’s biggest obsession this summer. The much-anticipated augmented reality game from Niantic Labs, features user-controlled characters who explore their real-life surroundings in search of Pokémon. Much if its success is attributable to its ease of use and ability to layer on top of the existing landscape. “Pokémon Go is hitting at just the right time for us as we focus on STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – this weekend at Iowa Speedway. We’ve been hearing about augmented reality for a while and now to see this technology implemented in such a compelling way is a lot of fun for us at the Track,” Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small said. “We specialize in bringing people together, and encouraging fans to play ‘Pokémon Go’ on their U.S. Cellular devices is a great way for us to leverage fan engagement and excitement, and expose new fans to Iowa Speedway who might not otherwise visit.” Iowa Speedway will add “Lure Modules” to help attract Pokémon to the two PokéStops at the Track – one at the Rusty Wallace adorned rock outside the Track’s Gift Shop and Administration Building, and the other underneath the Turn 4 Grandstands on the concourse. Seats in sections 307-309 and 408-411 are prime territory for collecting Poké Balls and Pokémon Eggs, and for capturing Pokémon who’ve been lured to the grandstands. In addition to the standard “Pokémon Go” activity available to fans, MeetBall, the real-time location sharing navigation application, will debut the “Pokey Piggy Puzzle,” to reward fans for navigating the Speedway during the race weekend with an assortment of prizes. MeetBall will also have one of the seven original Pokémon Pikachu cars on display at their booth, near the Concourse PokéStop! Last year, MeetBall beta-tested at Iowa Speedway during the NASCAR XFINITY Series U.S. Cellular 250 and enabled a more efficient race day experience through real-time GPS navigation tools and live access to the social media conversation. Beyond catching Pokémon and a couple of epic NASCAR races, fans will have the opportunity to enjoy rock cover band Snake Oil on Friday night, following the Casey’s General Stores 150 presented by Vatterott College. On Saturday night, following the U.S. Cellular 250, all in attendance can join drivers and other fans on the frontstretch of the track for the third annual Post-Race Party featuring country artist, Tim Dugger. Iowa Speedway, “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet”, is a state-of-the-art 7/8-mile asphalt paved tri-oval race track and motorsports facility located in Newton, Iowa. Our 2016 schedule includes three exciting race weekends: June 18-19 (NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Speediatrics 200 and NASCAR XFINITY Series American Ethanol E15 250 presented by Enogen), July 9-10 (ARCA Racing Series ABC Supply Co. 150 presented Casey’s General Stores and Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300) and July 29-30 (NASCAR K&N Pro Series Casey’s General Stores 150 presented by Vatterott College and NASCAR XFINITY Series U.S. Cellular 250).
