It’s Desert Classic Time at Canyon Speedway Park
PEORIA, AZ - The mud will be flying in furious fashion in the Phoenix area this weekend as Canyon Speedway Park is set to host the 27th Annual Desert Classic on Friday and Saturday. Following an open practice on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., two full nights of action featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Renegades and Mini Stocks will follow on Friday and Saturday with the green flag flying each night at 7:00 p.m. While the IMCA Modifieds will battle it out for a $5,000 winner’s share atop the 1/3-mile clay oval, a pair of track championships will be determined as well in the Pure Stock and Renegade ranks. Reigning Desert Classic champion Jason Noll enters the weekend on a CSP hot streak with three IMCA Modified wins in the last three events. Noll topped last year’s Desert Classic finale after Ricky Thornton, Jr., won the preliminary event. Thornton, Jr., has posted seven Modified wins at CSP this season after racking up 13 victories last year. Along with Noll and Thornton, Jr., recently crowned track champion Garrett Funk will be among the contingent of CSP contenders fending off a host of invaders from throughout the land over the course of the weekend. Friday’s card for IMCA Modifieds will consist of two-lap qualifying and Twin 20’s to set the stage for Saturday’s $5,000-to-win Desert Classic championship finale. With the IMCA Modifieds in the spotlight, the IMCA Sport Modifieds will mix it up as well atop the CSP clay for the first time this weekend. In the Arizona Differential Pure Stock ranks, Matt Martinez tries to put away the track title as he enters the weekend with a 24-point advantage over Chris McCurdy, Jr., with Zack Madrid another five points back. McCurdy, Jr., put a stop to a three-race Martinez win streak the last time out on October 24. Meanwhile, Daniel Romero takes a 28-point lead into the weekend over Chuck Thornton in the Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegade points chase. Romero and Thornton have both posted three wins this season while Mark Kilian topped the most recent feature on September 19. The Mini Stocks have made a pair of appearances at CSP this season with Kent Ewart, Jr., emerging victorious on both occasions.
