Late Model “Tune Up” Race Scheduled For This Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway

SELINSGROVE, PA - The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will return to Selinsgrove Speedway for the 17th Annual Jeff’s Auto Body & Recycling Center Late Model National Open on Sunday, Sept. 6. This year’s event has been changed to a one-day race over the Labor Day holiday weekend and will pay $8,000 to win and $600 to start the 40-lap A-main. A purse of more than $35,000 has been posted for the division’s crown jewel event. The limited late models will share the racing card in a 20-lap main event paying $1,000 to win and $100 to start. Williams Grove steel block limited late model rules will be in effect. Track officials also announced a reduced ticket price for the Sept. 6 race: Adult general admission will be $25; students (12-17) will be just $10; kids 11 and under are free; and pit passes will be $35. Last year, Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., wired the field for his second straight win in Selinsgrove’s Late Model Open. Lanigan went on to win last year’s World of Outlaws championship with a personal record of 17 wins. Chris Shuey of Orefield won the inaugural Late Model Open in 1999 followed by a win in the 2001 race. Jeff Rine of Danville, the track’s 10-time track champion, is the only four-time winner of the race, having won the Open in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Nick Dickson of Lewistown is the only other repeat winner with victories in 2007 and 2012. Other past winners of the Late Model Open include Kenny Pettyjohn of Millsboro, Del. (2000); Dale Kerstetter of Liverpool (2002); Jeff Smith of Blain (2003); Scott Haus of Hamburg (2004); Dan Stone of Thompson (2010); and Rick Eckert of York (2011). Nine-time winner Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., is the current World of Outlaws Late Model Series points leader by 154 markers over nine-time winner Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va. Four-time winner Rine recently took a 75-point lead in the Selinsgrove Speedway standings over three-time winner Steve Campbell of Danville. The Dauntless Hook & Ladder Fire Co. will be holding the Third Annual “Feed Your Speed” Pork BBQ Sandwich Sale in the speedway parking lot Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m. The cost is just $5.50 per sandwich and proceeds from this year’s sale will go to Cancer Care of PA. Additional refreshments will be available for purchase. Tickets will be sold on race day only. Track gates on Sept. 6 will open at 4 p.m. FREE camping will be permitted on the speedway grounds over the National Open weekend. This Saturday, Aug. 29, the late models will compete in a “tune up” race using the World of Outlaws qualifying format. Time trials and heat races will be used to set the lineup for the $1,500-to-win 25-lap main event. The 360 sprint cars and pro stocks will also be on the racing card. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with qualifying slated to start at 7:30 p.m. For the latest news, results, and race status, visit or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
